Clinical Interests
Management of benign and malignant bone and soft (connective) tissue tumors in both children and adults, bone infections, skeletal reconstruction, curettage of bone tumors and allograft procedures, and primary and revision total hip and total knee arthroplasty.
Research Interests
Cartilage research, bone repair, skeletal development, cancer and inflammatory diseases of bone.
Dr. O’Keefe is the Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine. He is a an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in musculoskeletal oncology and adult reconstructive surgery of the hip and knee. Dr. O’Keefe received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1985 and completed a surgical internship from Harvard Medical School/New England Deaconess Hospital in 1986. He served as an Instructor/Fellow of Research at the University of Rochester, School of Medicine and Dentistry until 1988, where he then went on to complete an orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Rochester Medical Center in 1992. He then completed a Fellowship in Orthopaedic Oncology from the Massachusetts General Hospital in 1993. In 2000, he pursued a doctorate degree in biochemistry and biophysics from the University of Rochester, School of Medicine and Dentistry. Prior to arriving at Washington University School of Medicine, Dr. O’Keefe served as the Marjorie Strong Wehle Professor and the Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, NY.
Dr. O’Keefe is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Association, American Society of Bone and Mineral Research, Association of American Physicians, Association of Osteobiology, Musculoskeletal Tumor Society, Orthopaedic Research Society and Siteman Cancer Center.
Awards
Dr. O’Keefe is the recipient of the Orthopaedic Research Society and the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation 2013 Distinguished Investigator Award, which was received on March 16, 2014, the AOA Resident Traveling Research Award for “Differential expression of transforming growth factor-ß receptors and biological effects in maturationally distinct subpopulations of growth plate chondrocytes”, the Kappa Delta Award and the Dane and Mary Louise Miller Endowed Research Grant from the Orthopaedic Research and Educational Foundation, American Orthopaedic Association ABC Traveling Fellowship, Fifth Annual Dr. Marvin J. Hoffman Award in the Area of Faculty Mentoring to Medical Students, and Best Doctors in America for Cancerous Tumor Surgery, 2009.
