Dr. Sandell was the first Director of the Orthopaedic Research Labs at Washington University, serving in this role from 1997-2015. She was the inaugural Mildred Simon Research Professor in Orthopaedic Surgery (2008-2019) and a founding Co-Director of the Musculoskeletal Research Center. Dr. Sandell is past president of the Orthopaedic Research Society, the American Society of Matrix Biology and the Osteoarthritis Research Society International. She is the recipient of numerous honors including the Kappa Delta Award (AAOS), the Shands Award (ORS), the Distinguished Investigator Award (ORS) and the Lifetime Achievement Award (ICRS). She is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Orthopaedic Research (2014-present).
