Intervertebral disc degeneration has been shown to progress in models blocking glucose importation, lactate exportation, and disc-injury. Prior work has demonstrated at least some reliance on increasing intracellular lactate for this degeneration. These studies seek to define the role of lactate and lactate transport in intervertebral disc degeneration.
