Response of the Osteoporotic Skeleton to in Vivo Loading

R01 AR047867 (Silva)

07/13/2001 – 03/31/2022
NIH/NIAMS $262,682 ADC

Assess the responsiveness of the osteoporotic skeleton to increased mechanical loading using mouse models of aging, with focus on the roles of osteoblast recruitment and Wnt signaling.

Osteogenic and Angiogenic Response to Skeletal Loading

R01 AR050211 (Silva)

07/25/2003 – 02/29/2020
NIH/NIAMS $246,941 ADC

Our goal is to determine the mechanobiological pathways that lead to bone formation after mechanical loading.

Rotator Cuff Degeneration and Repair

R01 AR057836 (Thomopoulos S and Galatz LM)

09/15/2010 – 08/31/2021
NIH/NIAMS $103,780 ADC

The goal of this project is to determine the mechanisms of rotator cuff degeneration and the effects of degeneration on tendon-to-bone healing.
Role: Subaward PI

The Role of Physiologic And Pathologic Ages On Rage Signaling In IVD Degeneration

R01 AR074441-01A1 (Tang)

07/01/2019-06/30/2024
NIH/NIAMS $220,000 ADC

Investigate the role of signaling of the AGE-RAGE axis in intervertebral disc homeostasis, injury, and disease.  Goals are to investigate the role of signaling of the AGE-RAGE axis in intervertebral disc homeostasis, injury, and disease.
Role: Co-Investigator

The Development and Rescue of an Atrophic Nonunion Model

F32 AR07619101 (Hixon)

09/01/2019 – 05/31/2022
NIH/NIAMS $63,926 ADC

This project will investigate the 3.6Col1-tk (Col1-tk) mouse as a model of atrophic nonunion, a form of nonunion where an osteochondral callus fails to form, making it extremely challenging to treat. The goal of this project is to establish a more relevant, pre-clinical nonunion model to test therapeutic interventions and develop a novel tissue-engineered scaffold to restore bone union.
Role: Mentor/Sponsor

Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms of Murine Digit Regeneration

F32 AR074895 (Qu)

02/01/2019 – 01/31/2021
NIH/NIAMS $63,926 ADC

This project will investigate the spatiotemporal response of PCs after digit amputation using Osx-CreERT2;Ai9 inducible reporter transgenic mice and test the requirement of proliferating PCs during digit regeneration by inducible conditional ablation of replicating PCs using 3.6Col1a1-tk transgenic mice.
Role: Mentor

Restoring the Responsiveness of Aged Bone to Mechanical Loading

F30 AG066310 (Chermside-Scabbo)

9/16/2019 – 9/15/2022
NIH/NIA $30,942 ADC

The focus of this project is to test mechanistically-motivated strategies to restore the responsiveness of aged bone to mechanical loading and to identify additional pathways that can promote bone formation in aged bone and reduce osteoporotic fracture risk.
Role: Mentor

Skeletal Disorders Training Program

T32 AR060719 (Civitelli)

05/01/2011 – 04/30/2021
NIH/NIAMS $329,766 ADC

This training program educates and forms the next generation of scientists and physicians committed to skeletal disorders, so that research in this area can be perpetuated, a better understanding of the causes of these diseases can be achieved, and the search for new treatment modalities can progress.
Role: Associate Director
